Three Men's Fencers Place In Top Three On Final Day Of NCAA Midwest Regionals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Notre Dame men’s fencing team placed three in the top three Sunday in final-day action at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional at Woodling Gymnasium on the campus of Cleveland State. Men’s foil saw two earn top-three finishes, with Reggie Bentley and Enzo Castellani finishing second and third, respectively.

Bentley and Castellani concluded the pool with identical records of 13-3, but Bentley earned the second-place results based on having a 10-touch advantage on the day at +49. Sophomore Nickolas Kubik finished just outside the top three with an overall record of 12-4 and a +25 indicator, good for fifth. Grant Hodges rounded out the Irish foilists, finishing in ninth with an 8-8 record highlighted by a 5-3 win over Ohio State’s Chris Colley who finished fourth overall.

The Irish sent four to the strip in epee, led by Michael Rossi in sixth place. Rossi concluded the day with a record 12-5 and a +19 indicator. James Kaull, Jack Piasio and Dale Purdy fell just shy of Rossi, finishing in seventh through ninth, respectively. Kaull wrapped up the day with 10 victories, Piasio with nine and Purdy with eight.

Keith Feldman led the way for the sabre squad, finishing in third place overall. The Irish senior finished with a 14-2 record in pool play to tie for first with Ohio State’s Max Stearns and Rhys Douglas, but fell 5-4 in fence-offs against both competitors to finish third.

Jason Choy finished fifth for Notre Dame, concluding the day with a 13-3 mark and a +32 indicator, while Kevin Hassett and Alexander Coccia finished in sixth and ninth respectively. Hassett ended the pool with a mark of 12-4, while Coccia concluded with an 8-8 record.

Notre Dame will learn if it has qualified the maximum 12 fencers for the 2012 NCAA Championship on Tuesday. The Championship, hosted by Ohio State University, runs March 22-25 in the French Fieldhouse in Columbus, Ohio.
