Swim & Dive Use Invitationals As Midseason Benchmarks

Both the Notre Dame swimming and diving programs headed to their respective fall invitational meets this weekend, providing their coaches with a glimpse into what their teams might look like come champion season. There were several bright spots for both squads, as the swimmers competed at the Ohio State Invitational while the divers were at the Texas Diving Invitational.

In Columbus, the men’s team finished fourth, and the women were sixth. Ohio State won the meet for both the men and the women. At a meet with several ranked teams and hundreds of swimmers, the Irish had a total of 23 top-10 finishes across the individual events.

Senior Jack Hoagland continued his dominant year. The distance specialist won the 500 freestyle (4:14.24) and 400 IM (3:43.52), and he finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle (14:58.23).

Sophomore Chris Guiliano narrowly missed the school record of 19.17 in the 50 freestyle, one which he owns himself. He finished second in the event with a time of 19.30.

Freshmen Marcus Gentry and Tommy Janton earned spots on the all-time top-10 list in the 100 backstroke, going 47.20 (eighth all-time) and 47.22 (ninth all-time), respectively.

The best events for the men’s team as a whole were the 400 IM and 100 backstroke, as three men finished in the top 10 in both.

Coleen Gillilan was the star of the show for the women’s team, finishing second in both the 100 butterfly (52.24) and 200 butterfly (1:55.54). The senior holds the school record holder in both events. She also finished seventh in the 200 IM (1:58.67) in Columbus.

Down in Austin, freshmen Daniel Knapp and Ben Nguyen had nice performances for the men’s dive team as seven schools competed at the Texas Diving Invitational. Knapp finished sixth in the 1-meter event (360.65), while Ngyuen was the seventh-place finisher on the platform (305.20).

Michigan transfer Allie Klein continues to prove to be a great pick up for the Irish dive team, as she finished ninth in the 3-meter.

The Notre Dame women finished fourth in the team event on Day 1, while the men were sixth. Full results can be found here. The groups switched when it came to the final results. The men wrapped up the weekend in the No. 4 spot, and the women were No. 6. Texas won both the men’s and women’s titles.

Up next, select Irish swimmers will head to the U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C. The competition will run from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.
