Sweet Named ACC Softball Player of the Week

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Abby Sweet earned this week’s ACC Player of the Week honor for her performance in the Mary Nutter Classic, the conference announced Tuesday. A member of the 2019 ACC All-Tournament Team, this is Sweet’s first time winning the title.

The junior outfielder and captain started all six games at center field on a weekend that saw an upset of No. 16 Arizona State, as well as victories over Seattle and BYU.

Overall, Sweet posted 10 hits, six runs, eight RBI and a home run. Boasting a .850 slugging percentage on the weekend, she notched 17 total bases. Four of Sweet’s 10 hits were doubles, and she stole four bases (on four attempts, notching a perfect stealing percentage).

In the five-inning, run-rule win against BYU, Sweet hit a home run in the opening inning, scoring the first run for the Irish. She also drove in two insurance runs on a double in the third.

Against Seattle, she notched three hits, including two doubles, and touched the plate for the deciding run in the game. Finally, in the 7-3 takedown of No. 16 Arizona State, Sweet’s double scored two insurance runs.

In the outfield through six games, she made several catches to save runs and strand opponents on base, registering five putouts.
