NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second straight game, No. 7/8 Notre Dame (2-0) used a big fourth quarter to come away with a victory, defeating Richmond (2-2) by a final score of 11-7 on Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium. The Irish outscored the Spiders 5-1 in the fourth frame to grab the win.
After sophomore Bryan Costabile posted the best game of his career in the opener, it was junior Brendan Gleason’s turn to be in the spotlight. The midfielder/attackman matched his career high in points with six coming off three goals and a career-high three assists.
Costabile and senior Mikey Wynne each scored two goals, while Brian Willetts, Brendan Collins, Ryder Garnsey and John Sexton each added a goal apiece.
How It Happened
The Irish offense was locked in from the opening faceoff, stymieing the Richmond attack and giving them a limited number of quality looks at the goal.
Collins opened the seal on the game with the opening goal at the 3:39 mark of the first quarter off a feed from Gleason. The Irish wasted little time doubling its lead to 2-0 right before the end of the frame, as Costabile netted his sixth goal of the season with a rocket from distance.
Notre Dame carried its momentum into the second stanza and completely controlled the quarter, outscoring the Spiders 3-0 to take a 5-0 lead into the halftime break. Gleason, Wynne and Sexton all etched their name in the scoring column to give the Irish the five-goal advantage.
Richmond stormed back in the third quarter, scoring six consecutive goals to take its first lead of the day at 6-5 with six minutes left in the period. The Irish responded and equalized, as Gleason snagged a loose ball and fed Willetts in front of the crease, who shook a defender and fired past the keeper to level the score at 6-6.
The Irish turned the tables on their guests in the last 15 minutes of play. The two sides traded goals over the first four minutes of action to move the score to 7-7 before Notre Dame seized control for the remainder of the contest. The Irish finished the game by scoring four unanswered goals to put away the 11-7 win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
Notre Dame Player Of The Game
Gleason had his hand in six of the team’s 11 goals, including each of the first three. The six points matched a career-high for the junior, as he tallied six off five goals and an assist in the first round of the NCAA Championship last season against Marquette. Gleason’s previous high for assists in a game was one.
Stat Of The Game
Notre Dame caused 11 turnovers on the afternoon compared to just four for Richmond. Sophomore Jack Kielty and freshman Arden Cohen led the team with three caused turnovers each. Fellow starting defenseman Hugh Crance also created havoc, forcing two Spider turnovers.

- With the win, the Irish are now 1-0 against the Spiders in the series.
- The Irish improve to 35-5 in games played in the month of February during Corrigan’s tenure.
- Notre Dame outshot Richmond 41-27 for the day, including an advantage of 24-13 on frame.
- Over the first two games of the season, the Irish have outscored the opposition 10-2 in the fourth quarter.
- Notre Dame was a perfect 27-for-27 in clear opportunities against Richmond.
- Wynne moved into a tie for sixth on the all-time career goals list with former teammate Sergio Perkovic. Wynne has 110 goals in his career.
- Gleason recorded the fourth hat trick of his career and first of the season.
- With two goals, Costabile now has seven on the season through just two games.
- Travisano scooped up a game-high eight ground balls.
- Crance and Cohen each posted career-highs in ground balls with six each.

The Irish hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to College Park, Maryland, to take on No. 3/3 Maryland in what has become an annual showdown. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 24. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
