Junior Justine Stremick, who will play the national anthem on the saxophone before Sunday's match against No. 17 Louisville, currently ranks 37th in the nation in blocks/game with 1.40.

Stremick, Stasiuk Repeat As Academic All-District V Honorees

Nov. 8, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior outside hitter Adrianna Stasiuk (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and junior middle blocker Justine Stremick (Langdon, N.D./Langdon Area) both earned spots on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V volleyball team announced by the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Stasiuk, an accountancy major with a 3.72 cumulative grade point average, found a seat on the first-team for the second time in as many seasons. With a GPA of 3.76 as a mathematics and life sciences major, Stremick was one of six members on the second team. Stremick was a third-team selection in 2006.

By gaining first-team honors, Stasiuk is currently under consideration for Academic All-America honors in balloting by CoSIDA.

“I’m really happy for each of them, knowing that both are great students and athletes,” said head coach Debbie Brown. “They’ve been outstanding on the volleyball court by putting up great statistical numbers, and have provided great leadership in the classroom as well.”

Currently sitting in 11th place on the school’s all-time kills list, Stasiuk (1,214) needs two more kills to surpass Kristy Kreher (1,215: 1998-2001). Entering Friday’s match with Cincinnati, Stasiuk has logged 3.14 kills/game this season. The senior also totaled enough digs against LSU (21) on Oct. 23 to move into the No. 3 spot on the school’s all-time digs list.

Stasiuk started each of the matches during the opening conference weekend at the libero position, and even tied a season-high mark of 21 digs at Pittsburgh despite suffering a toe injury. Stasiuk fired home 14 kills in the final two games against the Panthers after being relieved of libero duties. One day later, she had 17 scoops at West Virginia and came one kill shy of recording her eighth-consecutive double-double on the season.

A preseason all-BIG EAST choice who will play her last home match against No. 17 Louisville on Sunday (Nov. 11), Stasiuk will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most explosive and exciting players in recent Irish history with her signature jump serve and forceful attacks. She holds the following positions in Notre Dame’s record book:

Single-Season Records
Double-Doubles (kills/digs only) – 5th (17)
Consecutive Double-Doubles – T-2nd (7) (from 9/7/07-9/22/07)

Matches With 10+ Digs – T-8th (20)

1,000-Kill Club – 11th (1,214)

Double-Doubles (kills/digs only) – 2nd (59)
Ace Average – 5th (.293 aces/game)
Digs – 3rd (1,426)
Dig Average – 3rd (3.40 digs/game)
Matches With 10+ Digs – 2nd (88)
Matches With 20+ Digs – 4th (13)

Stremick, who intends on enrolling in medical school after graduation, turned in an incredible individual performance against Rutgers (Oct. 6) by finishing the match with a .706 hitting percentage, which was the highest mark by any Irish player since she turned in a .750 clip last season against South Florida. That average against the Scarlet Knights tied her for the 12th-best individual hitting percentage in program history. She turned in several career-best marks in Notre Dame’s match at Syracuse (Oct. 14), sparking the Irish attack with a career-best 19 kills on 36 attempts.

By firing in a .684 average against Georgetown, Stremick moved into a tie for 23rd on the program’s top single-match hitting percentage chart. In fact, her lifetime clip of .313 is third on the program’s career average list.

This past weekend against Georgetown (Nov. 2) and South Florida (Nov. 4), Stremick hung 13 kills on the Hoyas, and then lit up the Bulls for 18 converted swings on a .382 average. Stremick also had seven blocks against both Georgetown and South Florida, bringing her season average to 1.48 blocks/game in conference contests, ranking her fourth in the league. Overall, her 1.40 blocks/game puts her at 37th in the nation.

Founded by CoSIDA in 1952, the Academic All-America program recognizes and rewards the nation’s premier college scholar-athletes for their ability to achieve excellence on the playing field and in the classroom.
