Thirty-two winter sport student-athletes named to All-ACC Academic squads

Joanne Norell joined the Notre Dame athletic media relations staff in 2014 as  athletic  communications assistant. She currently works with the women’s soccer, fencing and men’s and women’s tennis programs as athletics communications assistant director.

Prior to arriving at Notre Dame, Norell earned a master’s degree in Sports Industry Management at Georgetown University. While in Washington, D.C., she held internships at the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman and with MLB’s Washington Nationals.

As Marketing & Communications Coordinator at the Military Bowl, Norell oversaw the day-to-day social media strategy and coordinated a weekly e-newsletter for fans, board members and benefactors. She also served as editor of the game day program in the run up to the 2012 contest at RFK Stadium.

While with the Nationals, Norell was a New Media Intern from May to December 2013. She assisted with all aspects of the social media strategy, including tracking analytics, planning social media events and campaigns, and contributing to the team blog. She also worked as a media relations volunteer at the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Regional at the Verizon Center.

Before her time on the east coast, Norell covered prep sports at five Southern Indiana high schools for the Dubois County Herald in Jasper, Indiana, from August 2011 to July 2012.

Norell graduated with distinction from Purdue University in May 2011 with a degree in mass communication and a minor in history. While at Purdue, she served as Assistant Sports Editor and, then, as the Executive Reporter for men’s basketball at the university’s independent student newspaper, the Purdue Exponent. In addition to writing and editing, she also contributed to the page design and layout of the paper and took part in a weekly sports podcast.

A graduate of Marian High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, Norell lives in Mishawaka  and enjoys running, reading, cooking and traveling.
