Awards Aplenty For Fighting Irish Media
Notre Dame athletics media production group earned 19 honors for professional excellence during 2015-16 academic year.
Javi Zubizarreta is one of the newest members to join the Fighting Irish Media (FIM) offices. In his role as producer, Zubizarreta focuses on the Fighting Irish women’s Olympic sports teams, with a specialty in human interest and community engagement stories.
A 2011 Notre Dame graduate, Zubizarreta served as a social video lead producer at Ogilvy & Mather for two years at their Chicago, Ill. location before returning to his alma mater. Known for a creative outlook, both he and his films have won numerous awards throughout the years.
His most recent feature film Zuretzako won the 2010 Princess Grace Undergraduate Film Scholarship and the 2010 Cary Grant Award, in addition to being named Best Screenplay at the Festival Internacional de Cine – Mexico and the audience selection winner at the Red Rock International Film Festival in 2013. In 2012, the film earned a Jury Special Mention at the Pasto International Film Festival in Colombia and was named an Official Selection at both the Festival Internacional de Cine de Leyva in Colombia and the Golden Diana International Film Festival in Austria. It was honored in 2011 as a Special Presentation to the World Basque Congress in Spain as well.
Zubizarreta’s documentary film, Artzainak: Shepherds and Sheep debuted on May 14, 2010, on Euskal Telebista, the Basque National Television service, and went on to be a finalist in the Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes Vinduero in Spain. It was chosen as an Official Selection at film festivals in five continents and was featured at the Antropofest International Film Festival in Prague; the Documentary Edge Campus in New Zealand; the Clermont Ferrand Short Film Market in France; the Ireland International Film Festival, and the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival in the United States.
A proud Basque-American, Zubizarreta shared time growing up in both Boise, Idaho and his father’s hometown of Gernika, Viscaya, Spain; as such, he holds dual citizenship in both the U.S. and Spain. His cinematographic work has been featured in the textbook “Basque Cinema: A Cultural and Political History” by Rob Stone and Maria Pilar Rodriguez.
Zubizarreta received his Bachelors degree in Film, Television and Theatre. He resides in South Bend, Indiana, and enjoys photography, writing, and cooking in his spare time.
