Purdue Upsets No. 7 Notre Dame

West Lafayette, Ind. — Jannon Roland led four Boilermakers in double figures as Purdue women’s basketball team upset No. 7 Notre Dame 73-58 at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. on Thursday night.

The victory was a measure of revenge for Purdue which was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year by Notre Dame 73-60.

With the victory Purdue moves to 3-2 on the season. Notre Dame, which played its seventh consecutive game away from home, fell to 6-2.

The Boilermakers led by one point at the half and built the lead to 49-37 with 13 minutes to play. Ukari Figgs scored eight of her 19 points in the 16-9 Boilermaker run to open the second half. The Irish chipped away at the lead drawing to within 54-52 following a Jeannine Augustin free throw with 4:53 remaining.

Purdue responded with a 11-0 run and to expand the lead to 13 points and Purdue led by double digits the rest of the game.

The Boilermakers shot just 36.8 percent from the field but connected on 8-of-18 attempts from behind the arc and enjoyed a 46-34 rebound advantage over the Irish.

Notre Dame was paced by senior guard Beth Morgan who scored 22 points while adding eight rebounds. Foul trouble slowed down National Player of the Week Katryna Gaither. Gaither entered the contest averaging 25.6 points and 9.7 rebounds but was held to 15 points and seven rebounds in playing just 25 minutes.

In addition to Roland and Figgs, Mackenzie Curless and Stephanie White also tallied in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Notre Dame opens BIG EAST Conference play this Saturday when the Irish host Providence at the Joyce Center. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
