Notre Dame Takes Two Titles at the Tom Fallon Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame freshman Ryan Zachire won the B Flight title at the Tom Fallon Invitational on Sunday while junior teammate Vijay Freeman was the winner in the D Flight. Sachire defeated teammate Danny Rothschild by a 6-3, 6-3 count while Freeman bested teammate Marco Magnano by a 6-4, 6-1 count for his title.

Sophomore Brian Patterson was the runnerup in the A flight as he lost to Martel Bufford of Colorado in the finals by a 7-5, 6-2 count.

Notre Dame freshman Rob Warn won the D Flight singles consolation flight with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Matt McDevitt of Iowa.

Notre Dame Advances Six to Finals of Tom Fallon Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame men’s tennis team advanced six players to the championship round of the 1996 Tom Fallon Invitational.

Notre Dame has six of the final eight undefeated singles players that will compete tomorrow in the championship matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the University Courts.

Notre Dame’s Brian Patterson advanced to the A Flight finals following a 6-2, 5-2 victory over Dan Lencina of Marquette. Patterson will face Martel Bufford of Colorado who was down a set to Notre Dame’s Ryan Simme in the semifinal round before Simme retired with an injury.

The B Flight final will feature two Notre Dame players as Danny Rothschild and Ryan Sachire compete for the championship. Both players advanced to the championship without losing a set.

Matt Horsley of Notre Dame rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Mark Jacobsen of Michigan State 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the C Flight championship against Purdue’s Greg Wessenberg.

Another all Irish final takes place in the D Flight final where Vijay Freeman and Marco Magnano won in straight sets.

The 14-team, three-day event concludes with the finals tomorrow. Matches begin at the Courtney Tennis Center at 9 a.m.

Notre Dame Impressive in Day One of the Tom Fallon Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame’s men’s tennis team advanced seven individuals and a doubles team to the quarterfinals after the first day of competition in the 10th Annual Tom Fallon Invitational Tournament.

Irish players Brian Patterson and Ryan Simme advanced to the round of eight in the A flight singles bracket while Danny Rothschild and Ryan Sachire have progressed to the quarterfinals in the B flight single bracket. Andy Warford, Ron Mencias and Marco Magnano also made it through day one undefeated for the Irish in singles competition.

While Notre Dame’s advanced seven of ten players to the quarterfinals, the Irish doubles teams were not as fortunate. Of the four doubles teams, only Marco Magnano and Andy Warford went undefeated and stayed in the winners bracket. Magnano and Warford are in the round of eight in the B flight doubles while both players are also alive in singles competition.

The 14-team, three-day event continues Saturday on the University of Notre Dame campus. The tournament concludes Sunday morning.
