Texas is now a member of the Big 12 Conference, a league which features the members of the former Big Eight Conference along with former Southwest Conference members Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas Tech…the league promises to be a competitive one as seven of its members were ranked in the final Associated Press poll last season…Texas was one of five teams last season to be ranked in the top 40 in each of these offensive categories: scoring (31.7 points per game/18th in country), rushing offense (207.0 ypg/22nd), passing offense (226.3 ypg/36th) and total offense (433.3 ypg/17th)…Longhorn flanker Mike Adams begins the year second in school history in receptions with 121 and needs five to break the school record…he already owns the receiving yards record and is eighth in touchdown receptions…Memorial Stadium in Austin will have a grass field, as opposed to artificial turf, for the first time this year since 1968…the Irish defeated Texas last season by a 55-27 count at Notre Dame…before that game, each of the last three meetings between the two schools had national championship implications with the Longhorns entering all three as the nation’s top-ranked team…the last meeting before last season between the two schools was in the 1978 Cotton Bowl and saw #5 Notre Dame throttle #1 Texas 38-10 to claim a national championship…the last time the Irish played in Austin was in 1952, a 14-3 Notre Dame win…Notre Dame also posted wins in Austin in 1913 and 1915…the last time Notre Dame played in the state of Texas was the 1994 Cotton Bowl, a 24-21 win over Texas A&M…the last time Notre Dame played a regular season game in the state of Texas was in 1973 at Rice, a 28-0 Notre Dame win.
