Irish Women Go Undefeated In 5 Matches At Duke

DURHAM, N.C. — The Notre Dame women’s fencing team went undefeated today in five dual meets held at Duke. The Irish beat Columbia-Barnard 22-10, North Carolina 24-8, Air Force 27-5, Duke 21-11, and Stanford 23-9.

The Irish were led by sophomore Myriah Brown (Mishawaka, Ind.) (17-2) and freshman Magda Krol (Vancouver, BC) (6-0 in epee, 11-1 in foil).

“Magda was very important to us today,” said Irish head coach Yves Auriol. “She fenced both foil and epee for us, depending onour opposition, and she always gave us a lift. Myriah fenced very well today, too.

“I was pleased with our effort. The women knew we had some tough matches today, especially Columbia and North Carolina, and were ready. They performed well as a team.”

The Irish fencing teams take a break from competition next weekend, but some individual fencers will be competing at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships at Marlborough, Massachusetts.

“We can use the break from competition,” said Auriol. “It wl give us some time to rest up, heal some bumps and bruises, and figure out what we need to do to get ready for the rest of the season.”
