NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior No. 11 Brett Helgeson and senior Sheeva Parbhu were each named to the 2008 Mary Davis Memorial Shootout All-Tournament squad after posting perfect weekends. Parbhu and Helgeson each went 2-0 in singles and the duo captured their only match in doubles.
Helgeson (Overland Park, KS) opened the invitational on Friday with a straight-set victory over Christian Christensen of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-3. He returned on Saturday with another straight-set triumph over the Buckeyes’ Shuhei Uzawa, 6-1, 6-4. Helgeson improved to 15-1 on the year and now stands 69-18 for his career.
Parbhu (Omaha, NE) also picked up a pair of victories. He cruised past Shane Collins of Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2, on Friday before outlasting Balazs Novak of Ohio State, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday. He improved to 10-5 on the season and now stands 104-32 for his career.
Helgeson and Parbhu upended Peter Aarts and Scott Bruchman of Michigan, 8-6. The Irish tandem evened their record to 2-2 on the year.
Freshman Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, OH) split his two matches. Havens defeated Andrew Mazlin of Michigan, 7-6, 6-3, on Friday, but dropped his match with Uzawa of Ohio State by an identical score, 7-6, 6-3. He now stands 9-5 on the season.
Havens joined Parbhu for a match on Saturday and the duo got past Aarts and Bruchman of Michigan, 8-4. Havens and Parbhu improved to 3-0 on the year.
Novak and Uzawa of Ohio State were the other two members of the all-tournament team.
