Shannon Byrne Takes First Round Lead At Notre Dame Women's Campus Championship

Aug. 31, 2002

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame junior Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) shot an eight-over par 80 to take a two-stroke lead over teammate Suzie Hayes (Fr., Dublin, Ireland) and Lauren Gebauer in the opening round of the 2002 Notre Dame women’s Campus Championship held at the Warren Golf Course.

The tournament was optional for members of the Notre Dame women’s golf team as they were qualifying for the team’s season-opening tournament at Michigan State September 21-22.

Byrne, a two-year monogram winner for the Irish, fired her 80 on the par-72, 5,955-yard Warren Golf Course in her first action since last spring. She was second on the team in scoring with an 81.50 average in 2001-02 and finished second at last year’s tournament.

Hayes finished her first 18 holes with an 82 to tie for second with Gebauer in her first round of action after an outstanding junior career in Ireland.
