Detroit, Mich. – Former Notre Dame hockey standout Riley Sheahan (St. Catharine’s, Ont.) has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the National Hockey League (NHL) team announced on Thursday morning.
A first round draft choice of the Red Wings, 21st overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Sheahan had signed an amateur tryout contract following the end of the Notre Dame hockey season on March 20 and has been playing with Detroit’s American Hockey League farm team the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the contract were not disclosed. Sheahan could see action in one of Detroit’s final two regular-season games.
The 6-2, 212-pound center scored his first AHL goal last weekend (March 31) and added an assist in a win over the Oklahoma City Barons for Grand Rapids. In seven games with the Griffins, Sheahan had a goal and an assist for two points with no penalty minutes.
Sheahan played three seasons for the Irish and had his best year in 2011-12, finishing fourth on the team in scoring with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points. Five of his goals came on the power play with one short-handed tally and one game-winning goal. He was named one of three finalists for the CCHA’s top defensive forward award prior to the CCHA Championship weekend in Detroit.
In three seasons at Notre Dame, the 20-year old Sheahan played in 114 games and finished his career with 20 goals and 44 assists for 64 points with 10 power-play goals, two short-handed goals and two game winners.
