Reaney Wins ACC Championship In 200 IM

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving standout Emma Reaney made a statement to the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference Thursday night with a dominating performance in the 200 IM as she claimed the first ACC individual championship in program history.

Reaney, who swam a leg of the school-record 200 medley relay team Wednesday night, lowered her own school mark in the 200 IM with an NCAA “A” cut time of 1:54.92 to breeze past the field in 2.26 seconds. The time broke her own ACC record and also broke the ACC Championship meet record that was originally set by Virginia’s Megan Evo (1:56.17) in 2009.

“Emma is just a competitor,” said head coach Brian Barnes. “I wanted her to be at the front of the pack after the first 100 and she did that. At that point she made it her heat. Look at her breaststroke splits. She is the best breaststroker in the conference. It was a fun race to watch.”

Notre Dame teammates Katie Miller (10^th – 1:58.81) and Genevieve Bradford (19^th – 2:00.46) both notched NCAA “B” cuts in the event.

After entering the day in a tie for fourth, the Irish will begin day three in sixth place (264.5 points) but have some strong competitors set to compete Friday, including Reaney in the 100 breaststroke.

The Irish opened Thursday night with a ninth-place showing in the 200 free relay as the foursome of senior Christen McDonough, freshman Catherine Mulquin, sophomore Genevieve Heidkamp and junior Courtney Whyte finish the race in 1:32.71.

On the first day of diving, sophomore Lindsey Streepey placed sixth on the 1-meter, totaling 315.00 points to earn 24 points for the Irish. Despite not making the finals, sophomore Emma Gaboury (11^th – 289.70) and junior Allison Casareto (12^th – 282.20) earned 31 points towards Notre Dame’s team score.

Elsewhere on day two, junior Bridget Casey tied for 21^st in the 500 free (4:52.65) “C” final and senior Kelly Ryan (20^th – 23.16) and McDonough (21^st – 23.18) competed in the 50 free “C” final.

“I’m not disappointed about today,” said Barnes. “I’m really proud with how the team responded. Bridget (Casey), Katie (Miller), Emma (Reaney) and Genevieve (Bradford) all dropped their times tonight. I told them afterwards that it’s a seven-session meet. I like this group because they are smart, resourceful, work their tails off and care about this team.”

Friday’s action gets underway at 11 a.m. (ET) with the 400 IM prelims. Other events on day three will be the 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 3-meter dive.
