GREENSBORO, N.C. – Already a multi-time pool, school and conference record holder, University of Notre Dame junior Emma Reaney made national headlines Saturday night at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships as she broke the NCAA and American record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a remarkable time of 2:04.34. The mark is .14 seconds faster than Texas A&M senior and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 4×100-meter medley relay Breeja Larson swam in 2012.

“I dropped about a second off my best time,” said Reaney. “We’ve been discussing taking it out faster, and my coach (Barnes) has been telling me that if I am under a minute in the first 100, I am going to go 2:04, and that’s what happened tonight.”

“Emma had a strategy going into the race – we believed she could get out through the first 100 yards in under a minute,” said head coach Brian Barnes. “She stuck to the plan and threw down something special. It’s not very often you get to see something special in our sport. It was a great way to finish the week, a week that was very good for the Irish.”

As soon as Barnes saw the time he was immediately overcome with joy as he realized what Reaney had just accomplished.

“It was complete joy – joy for her, joy for the program and joy for Notre Dame. She has shown the country that you can go to an elite academic institution and swim fast.”

Reaney, meanwhile, didn’t know just how important her time would mean nationally.

“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” she said. “I didn’t hear or know anything (about the NCAA and American record) until my assistant coach gave me a hug and told me. It was definitely a shock to the system.”

After winning three individual events with school, ACC and ACC meet record times to go along with her American record, the Lawrence, Kan., native was named the Most Valuable Female Swimmer of the meet. Last year she was selected as the BIG EAST’s Most Outstanding Swimmer after winning six titles (three individual, three relay) and earning all-BIG EAST honors seven times.

With Reaney as the highlight, the Irish turned in an outstanding week at the championships to claim sixth (802 points) in their opening ACC meet. The University of Virginia won its seventh straight championship with 1,433 points.

“I’m very pleased with how this team performed this week,” said Barnes. “It wasn’t a perfect meet for us, but they laid a foundation for us to be successful in the ACC. We had to fight through some adversity and the team learned a lot about who they are in these last few days.”

Personal bests were the norm throughout the week as all 20 Irish competitors either competed in finals or scored points.

Saturday proved to be no different as junior Bridget Casey broke her own school record in the 200 fly to take fourth in the event (1:56.52).

Overall, six school records fell and six Irish swimmers punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships. Reaney, senior Kelly Ryan, juniors Courtney Whyte and Suzanne Bessire and freshmen Catherine Mulquin and Katie Miller have automatically qualified, while a few others wait on the official word in the next week. The Irish divers will look to qualify for nationals at the NCAA Zone C diving meet in a few short weeks.
