Quinn Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Jan. 9, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame senior guard Chris Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the week of Jan. 9. In road games against Pittsburgh and DePaul, Quinn averaged 26.5 points, 9.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds. He was also 7-16 (.438) from beyond the arc on the week.

In Notre Dame’s first game of the week – a double-overtime thriller with Pittsburgh – the Irish co-captain set career highs in points (37), field goals (12), field goals attempted (23) and minutes played (49) and tied his career high in assists (9). From the 4:02 mark of the first half until just 14 second remained in regulation, Quinn scored 16 straight Notre Dame points to cut his team’s deficit from 64-55 to 77-74, then dished off the assist on Colin Falls’ three-point field goal that sent the game into overtime. His 37 points were also a Petersen Events Center single-game record.

Three days later against DePaul, Quinn poured in 16 points and handed out nine assists to lead a furious second-half comeback by the Irish that ultimately fell just short.

Quinn currently ranks 10th in the BIG EAST in scoring with 16.3 points per game, and second in the conference in assists with 78 helpers in 12 games for an average of 6.50. His 42.1 percent accuracy from long distance is good for sixth in the league, and his 86.0 percent accuracy from the free throw line puts him at eighth in the BIG EAST.

Quinn’s selection to the Honor Roll marks the fifth such nod for the Irish this season. Sophomore forward Rob Kurz was the first Notre Dame player to earn the honor, finding his way onto the Nov. 21 list after an 18-point, eight-rebound effort in the season opener. Senior forward Torin Francis garnered Honor Roll recognition in two consecutive weeks – Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 – by averaging 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds and helping the Irish go 3-0 over the two-week stretch. Freshman guard Kyle McAlarney was named to the Honor Roll for the week of Dec. 29 after averaging 13.0 points per game in wins over Niagara and Columbia.

Cincinnati senior forward Eric Hicks and Marquette senior forward Steve Novak were named the league’s co-players of the week. Hicks recorded the 10th triple-double in BIG EAST history with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks in a win over Marquette and followed that up with 20 points and 15 boards in a victory over DePaul. Novak tallied 41 points and 16 rebounds – the highest total of points and rebounds in league history – in Marquette’s first-ever BIG EAST game to lead Marquette to a 94-79 win over Connecticut. He followed that effort with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to Cincinnati.

DePaul’s Wilson Chandler was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds on 64 percent shooting from the floor in a 1-1 week for the Blue Demons.
