Peeke Named To U.S. National Team For Upcoming World Championship

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – Former University of Notre Dame defenseman Andrew Peeke has been named to the U.S. Men’s National Team for the upcoming World Championships, USA Hockey announced on Thursday (May 5).  

The 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship will be hosted by Finland from May 13-29 with  Tampere and Helsinki serving as host cities.

Peeke is set to become the 17th former Fighting Irish player to take part in the prestigious event. Cal Petersen and Matt Hellickson played in last year’s event, winning bronze with Team USA in Latvia. All told with Peeke in 2022, Notre Dame will have had 17 former players combine for 22 U.S. National Team appearances.

Peeke recently completed his third professional season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, skating in a career high 82 games while scoring a pair of goals and adding 13 assists for 15 points. He has now played 115 NHL games. 

After being drafted by Columbus in the second round (34th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft,  Peeke played for the Irish from 2016-19 and served as the team’s captain as a junior in 2018-19. 

The Parkland, Florida native was part of three NCAA tournament teams that reached at least the NCAA Regional Finals and included Frozen Four semifinal (2017) and championship game (2018) appearances. Peeke also helped the Irish to a Big Ten Regular Season Championship in 2017-18 and Big Ten Tournament titles in 2018 and 2019.

Peeke skated in 119 games in his Irish career, notching 12 goals and adding 40 assists for 52 points. He had a career-best year offensively as a junior and finished the season as the team’s fourth-leading scorer with three goals and 21 assists for 24 points. His 21 assists ranked second on the team. He earned Big Ten All-Academic Team honors as a sophomore and junior.
