Junior Marshall Sherman is a key member of the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team this season. Sherman, who hails from Columbus, Ohio, specializes in the freestyle and backstroke for the Irish. Sherman has posted personal bests of 46.26 seconds in the 100 free and has a 50.14 mark in the 100 back with both marks being among the top 10 times at Notre Dame in each event. Sherman and his teammates return to action this week after the Christmas break when they compete in a 5:00 p.m. (CT) meet at Northwestern on Wednesday, Jan. 12. A member of three Ohio state championship teams at St. Charles High School in Columbus, Sherman recently sat down with und.com’s Tom McGuire to tell us more about himself.

If you could trade places with your coach for a day, what would you do? If I could trade places with Coach Welsh I would give everyone a “Good Morning Irish” and tell them to take the day off.

What five words do you think best describe you? The five words that best describe me are motivated, relaxed, humorous, trustworthy and debonair.

What is your major? Why did you choose that major? My major is accounting. Both of my parents were accountants, so it must be in my blood.

What is the biggest meet you’ve ever participated in? The biggest meet that I have ever been in would be The Big East Championships.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions? I enjoy listening to James Blunt before my races.

North or South Dining Hall? Why? I prefer North Dining Hall because of its close proximity to my dorm and that lets me be somewhat lazy.

What is your favorite memory with your teammates? My favorite memory with my teammates is winning the Big East during my freshmen year.

Describe your perfect day – who would you spend it with, what would you do, where would you be? My perfect day would include sleeping in, enjoying a nice day at the beaches of Saint Martin and naps.

What is your dream job? For my dream job I would love to work for the Scranton Branch of Dunder Mifflin.

Where is your favorite place to study on campus? My favorite place to study on campus is in the Siegfried 2A study room.

If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? I would like to have dinner with Viscount Severns.

What is your theme song? My theme song is “Iron Lion Zion” by Bob Marley.

Who is your funniest teammate? My funniest teammate is too hard to pick. I’ve got a lot of really funny teammates.

Who was your role model growing up? My role model growing up was my older brother, Mitchell.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? If I could only eat one thing the rest of my life, I’d have to go with Mac & Tuna.

What does being a part of the Fighting Irish swimming program mean to you? Being a part of the Fighting Irish swimming program can be summed up in one word – family.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure song? My guilty pleasure song is “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent.

Do you have any nicknames? I have a couple of nicknames — Marshvipe, Viper and The King.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? The craziest thing that I have ever done is probably bungee jumping–that was intense!

What was the biggest thing that attracted you here to Notre Dame? The biggest thing that attracted me to Notre Dame was the close-knit community that’s present here, both for the University and my team.
