Notre Dame Welcomes In Two Big Ten Foes For Shamrock Invitational

Jan. 30, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship meet just three weeks away, the No. 24 University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team returns to Rolfs Aquatic Center for the first time in 2.5 months Friday and Saturday for the the ninth-annual Shamrock Invitational.

The Irish (6-5) are set to dual Big Ten foes Iowa and Northwestern while the Notre Dame men will battle the Hawkeyes and Missouri State. The two-day meet is broken down into three sessions: 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Friday’s action will be video streamed live on WatchND with Notre Dame students and veteran Irish broadcasters Rich Hidy and Andrew Bartolini on the call.

The entire meet should be available via as well as the Meet Mobile App.

“What I like about the Shamrock meet is the timing of it,” said head coach Brian Barnes. “It’s a couple of weeks out from ACCs and it’s three sessions. It will be great prep for the ACC meet as a lot of individuals will swim a lot of races. The meet will provide us some information about our conference team.”

Notre Dame is coming off a 171-129 loss at then-No. 14 Louisville (now tied for 13th), but has shown improvement has the year has gone on as evidenced by four dual wins in November and a dominating performance at the Hawkeye Invitational secured the Irish a first-place finish.

Along the way, junior All-American Emma Reaney earned five ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week awards while junior diver Allison Casareto and sophomore diver Lindsey Streepey have earned one ACC Women’s Diver of the Week award apiece.

In addition, three relay teams are ranked in the top 25 in the country and six individuals are ranked in the top-50 nationally 10 times in eight different events.

Two of those ranked among the nation’s best are seniors Christen McDonough and Kelly Ryan, who have had solid seasons in the breast and back strokes, respectively. McDonough and Ryan, along with Sarah Dotzel, Mikelle Masciantonio and Lauren Stauder will swim in their next to final home meet this weekend but will be honored with a pre-session senior day ceremony Saturday evening before the final session gets underway.
