AdvoCare Invitational 2015

Game 7: Notre Dame-Iowa

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey
“Last night was extremely disappointing for us. We didn’t do much with the scouting report, we talked a lot about us up until the pregame meal, being better with our offensive efficiency. And I thought we were, but our defense won the game for us against a very potent offensive team, and a team that I think’s going to be an NCAA tournament team. So as tough as last night was, I think you may have a resume win tonight. It’s funny how 24 hours in these tournaments, things can turn around. And we have a chance to win against a power conference team on Sunday. Getting out of Disney 2-1 after last night ââ’¬¦ Merry Christmas. It’d be pretty good.”

“I thought again their transition offense had us on their heels, like last night. And that’s an area we still have to be better, but we got control of it after the first seven or eight minutes. And I thought our offensive efficiency was fabulous. Our bench was great tonight. The three guys that came off for us really gave us a great lift. I’m still learning about us. I’m trying to figure us out. But I like what those three guys gave us.”

“Matt Ryan does things for our team. He just stretches that defense. He’s really our sixth man, and that’s why I subbed him by himself tonight early. He’s just a key guy for us. He rebounded for us, he defended for us, he swung the ball and then he made shots. Matt Farrell was good, too. Spacing was good. What we didn’t do last night was reverse the ball enough. We talked real simply today in practice, like, ‘Can we just reverse the ball twice before we do something?’ And we have good students, and I thought we digested that well. So, I’m really happy for them. We’re trying to figure out who we are. To bounce back and get an Iowa team, well, God, that’s a good night for this group.”

“Thank you. Beat Stanford.”

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffrey
“It was very similar to last night’s game. Made a bunch of shots early, then the offense wasn’t clicking, the defense was not what it needed to be against a team of this caliber. Fall behind. Get it figured out. Ratchet up the defensive intensity. Get some stops. Get some momentum. Take the lead after being down 15. And then proceeded to let them score like four or five straight possessions. That’s what’s disappointing, because I thought we fought hard enough to win the game. We did enough good stuff to be in a position to win the game. We couldn’t close it out.”

“I think we really were settling for 3’s, because they came so easy early. We’re 6-for-24. Not a good percentage. I can’t remember that many that you could say ‘That was an awful shot.’ We seemed to be open. But we’ve got to be able to mix it a little better. Drives. Post feeds. Threes. We really didn’t do that. We just kind of kept jacking. We hit a couple, that helped us get back in it, and then we turned around and missed a few more. We’ve got to diversify the offense a little bit, I think.”

“We ââ’¬” me and Jarrod (Uthoff) and Sapp (Anthony Clemmons) ââ’¬” made some tough shots. Woody (Adam Woodbury) was the only one that made some easy shots. Me and Jarrod would get their 1-2 best defenders, but we’ve got to work on our shot. But at the same time we need to learn how to get easy shots. ââ’¬¦ We thought we were on a roll, but we got trigger happy, we started shooting a lot of 3’s. We should have been attacking, but we’re going to get better and just learn from this.”
