Saturday's meet will be the final competition for the Irish before the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships.

Notre Dame To Compete With St. Mary's And Olivet On Saturday

Feb. 6, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will join St. Mary’s (Ind.) and Olivet Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Irish (6-6) are slated to challenge the men of Olivet while St. Mary’s will compete against the Tigers’ women.

The dual meet will serve as a final tune-up before the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships held in Indianapolis from Feb. 18-21. Notre Dame is hoping to win the team title for the second year in a row and the third time in four tries. It will also be a landmark event in the fact that the occasion is the first the Notre Dame’s men swim alongside St. Mary’s.

“We know that this is a meet that will help us in the sense that we are halfway between the Shamrock Invitational and the conference meet,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “A chance to race at this point in the season will help us. It will also give us a chance to try out some relay combinations for the championships and to help determine other possible entries.”

Three more wins were added to the 2008-09 win total for Notre Dame on Jan. 24 as the Irish swept the Shamrock Invitational. Notre Dame picked up victories in four events over the final two sessions to secure the victories over Denver (190-180), Michigan State (232-138) and West Virginia (243-127).
