NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Following a record-setting performance in the Dennis Stark Relays, the University of Notre Dame swimming and diving team swept their dual meets against Oakland and Indiana State at Rolfs Aquatics Center on Saturday.

Notre Dame’s men’s team dominated the competition, defeating Oakland, 175-107. The Irish women’s squad also won, topping Indiana State, 179-81.

“I actually thought they responded very well and they prepared for it in terms of rest and proper warmup,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Litzinger says. “The credit goes to them. We had some really nice performances today. It’s still a work in progress, but we took a couple steps forward.”

Freshman Katie Smith (Rochester, New York/Pittsford Sutherland) recorded first place in all three of her events, including the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.95), 50-yard freestyle (23.00) and 100-yard freestyle (51.29).

“I thought Katie Smith in the 50 free at about 23 [seconds] is a really great dual meet performance,” Litzinger said. “To have someone go [about 23 seconds] consistently is really a great thing.”

On the men’s side, junior Robert Whitacre (Oceanport New Jersey/Christian Brothers Academy) finished in first place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.01), 100-yard backstroke (49.12) and 200-yard backstroke (1:46.48).

The Irish return to action in their meet against Georgia Tech and Emory on October 21 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“It’s an ACC meet against Georgia Tech,” Litzinger said. “It’s a two-day format again. Georgia Tech has a very capable and well-coached men’s team, so I think we are going to have to clean up a couple things on the guys’ side.

“We had our mid-season meet scheduled for Greensboro because that’s where the [ACC Championship] meet was originally going to be. To have the meet switched to Georgia Tech and have the ability to swim them in a dual meet at home kind of serves that same preparation purpose as well. So we’ll take advantage of it.”
