Notre Dame Suffers 2-1 Overtime Loss to Georgetown In BIG EAST Men's Quarterfinal Matchup

Notre Dame, Ind. – Trevor Goodrich scored the second of his two goals 4:46 into overtime to lift the No. 5 seed Georgetown Hoyas to a 2-1 overtime come-from-behind victory over No. 4 seed Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the 2002 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship. The loss was just the second at home for the 15th-ranked Irish this season as Coach Bobby Clark’s squad fell to 11-5-3 on the season. With the win, Georgetown evened its record to 8-8-1 in 2002.

Entering the game, Goodrich had only scored one goal all season. Georgetown’s game-winning score came with the Irish owning a man-advantage in the contest after Kevin Sindelar was issued a red card at the 86:02 mark of the second half. The overtime contest was the seventh played by the Irish this season (Notre Dame is 2-2-3 in those games). The loss marked the second time this seasonNotre Dame dropped an overtime decision while playing with a man advantage. Earlier in the season, Clark’s squad suffered a 1-0 setback to Pittsburgh at Alumni Field on October 4.

Notre Dame, which was looking to avenge a 3-2 regular-season loss to the Hoyas in Washington, D.C., on October 26, jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 41:06 mark of the first half when Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) knocked in a shot from eight yards out off assists from Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) and Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.).

Notre Dame thoroughly dominated the Hoyas in both half as the Irish outshot the visitors 17-5 in the first two halves and ownd an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks through the first two periods.

A steady downpour affected play throughout the second half and eight yellow cards were issued, plus the one red card was issured in the 90 minutes of regulation.

Georgetown got on the scoreboard on Goodrich’s goal off assists from Ben Dow Jefferson and Michael Banner 11:38 into the second half as he blasted a shot from 12 yard out that came from the left side of the box. His notched his game-winning score by blasting a shot in past Irish goalkeeper Chris Sawyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) into the right corner of the goal.

Tim Hogan finished with five sves in goal for the Hoyas, including three in the first half which prevented the Irish from scoring more than just the one goal.

Tonight’s matchup was the third time the two schools had met at Notre Dame in a BIG EAST quarterfinal game. Heading into the contest, the Irish had won the two previous matchups, including last year’s 1-0 win at Alumni Field. Notre Dame was looking to advance to the semifinals of the conference championship for the second straight year and third time in eight seasons as a league member.

Notre Dame will now wait for the announcement of the NCAA Tournament pairing which will be made on Monday, November 18.
