March 20, 2004

BOERNE, Texas – The Notre Dame women’s golf team turned in its second 319 in as many rounds at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout on Saturday. The Irish find themselves in 12th place with their 36-hole score of 638, 47 strokes behind Indiana, which is in first place at the prestigious 54-hole event. The Hoosiers, with three golfers in the top five, own a 10-shot lead over second-place Texas Tech (296-305-601) after shooting impressive rounds of 297 and 294 for a 591 total. The 19-team tournament, including five top-50 teams (Golfweek/Sagarin), is being played on the par-72, 6,007-yard course at Tapatio Springs Golf Resort.

The Irish continue to be paced by freshman Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) who shot an 80 on day two after firing a one-under par 71 in the opening round, giving her a 36-hole mark of 151. Nakazaki fell from a first-place tie in the 113-player field to a tie for 13th, nine strokes behind tournament-leader Danah Ford of Indiana (72-70-142). Ford holds a two-shot advantage over Texas Tech’s Sheila Mendez (73-71-144) and a three-stroke lead on teammate Karen Dennison’s 145 (73-72).

Next for Notre Dame is sophomore Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) as she shot a five-over 77 on Saturday, the low round by an Irish player on the second day of the tourney. With her first-round 81, Brophy has a mark of 158 for 36 holes and is tied for 42nd.

After Brophy, junior Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) is third among Notre Dame players with a two-round score of 162 after carding a pair of 18-hole totals of 81.

Rounding out the lineup are sophomores Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark). Gebauer rebounded from a first-round 90 to shoot an 81 in round two, giving her a 171 for 36 holes. Bassett has total of 174 (86-88) after two rounds of play.

The final 18 holes of the fourth annual Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout will commence on Sunday, March 21, at 8:14 (EST) with split tee times. Results will be available on www.und.com following Sunday’s action.
