Each year at the first University of Notre Dame home football game, the University recognizes all former Irish football players, coaches and other members of the Notre Dame football family who have passed away in the last year with a moment of silence prior to kickoff.
Representing that group, the national colors will be presented prior to the Notre Dame-Temple game Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium by Joey Elliott, wife of former Notre Dame assistant coach Bob Elliott who passed way in July. She will be joined by the the Elliotts’ children-Jessica and Grant.
Here are the deceased football monogram winners who will be recognized Saturday (their names will be scrolled on the video board): Braxston Banks (’90), Edward Buczkiewicz (’53), Fred Curto (’51, student manager), Bob Erkins (’45, student manager), Bill Fischer (’49), Tom Gasseling (’71), Ralph Guglielmi (’55), Dick Hendricks (’56), John Horney (’67), Andy Huff (’73), Jim Leahy (’69), Ara Parseghian (honorary monogram recipient and former head coach), Art Perry (’52, ’64), Neil (Buz) Seaman (’59), John Soutner (’77, football), George Sullivan (’48, ’56), Ernie Virok (he played in 1945), Ed Vuillemin (’69) and Robert Ward (’58). Also recognized will be Bob Elliott (former Irish assistant coach), Jeff Jeffers (’77, honorary monogram recipient and former WNDU-TV sports director), Konrad Reuland (he played at Notre Dame in 2006-07) and Sheena Watson-Studstill (mother of current Irish player Devin Studstill).
In addition to recognition of these individuals, as part of the moment of silence the Notre Dame family will extend prayers and support to students, alumni and all in Texas who have been affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.
