Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams nearly completed a sweep of the weapons championships Saturday at the Midwest Conference Championships. The Irish captured five weapons titles, with rival Northwestern winning the remaining weapon championship of women’s epee. Overall, the Irish won the men’s, women’s, and overall championships.
The Irish men finished perfect on the day, with wins in epee, foil, and sabre (Winning the Midwest Conference team championship for the 19th time, dating back to 1968). Men’s epee posed the greatest challenge for the Irish, as they completed an impressive comeback after trailing Ohio State 4-3 in the finals. The Irish rallied, scoring two consecutive victories to edge the Buckeyes 5-4.
Men’s sabre and foil proved less difficult for the Irish. Men?s foil defeated the Wayne State squad 5-2. Meanwhile, men’s sabre defeated Ohio State 5-3. Ohio State’s finish of 385 points, was nearest the Irish, who notched up 450 points in the men’s overall competition.
Northwestern’s defeat of the Irish women’s epee squad in the semifinals denied the Irish of it’s sixth first-place finish on the day, but the Irish did manage to defeat Wayne State (5-1) to earn a third place victory. The strong finish enabled the women’s team to stay in tight competition with Northwestern.
The Irish countered Northwestern’s ousting of the in the semifinals, with a 5-2 win over the Wildcats in the women’s sabre semifinals. The Irish met Northwestern once more, this time in the finals, as the Irish women’s foil squad emerging victorious with a 5-3 victory.
Today concluded the 2002 Midwest Conference Team competition. Tomorrows competition will consist of the Midwest Conference Individuals Competition. Fencing is set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Joyce Center Field House.

* Kate Rudkin, Northwestern – The 4th-place finisher at the 2001 NCAAs, Rudkin has become a rival of the ND fencers … Rudkin is 4-2 vs. ND’s Anna Carnick the past two season, with Carnick winning at the 2000 NCAAs (3-2, Rudkin won 3-5 at the ’01 NCAAs) and the 2002 OSU Duals (5-3) … ND’s Meagan Call owns one win in six bouts vs. Rudkin (5-4 at the 2001 ND Invitational), with 5-4, 5-4 losses at the last two NCAAs … ND freshman Kerry Walton split a pair of 5-4 vs. Rudkin this season (winning at OSU).

* Kristen Dorf, Northwestern – A 2000 and 2001 NCAA qualifier, Dorf has split six previous bouts vs. Boutsikaris (who posted 5-1, 5-3 wins vs. Dorf in ’01 and a 5-3 win this season at OSU) while Kryczalo dominated Dorf this season (5-0, 5-0) and Ament beat her 5-1 aty OSU.
* Julia Foldi, Northwestern – The Wildcats freshman beat Boutsikaris twice this season (1-5, 0-5) but lost twice to Kryczalo (5-1, 5-2) and dropped a 5-2 bout to Ament at OSU.
Women’s Sabre
* Louise Bond-Williams, Ohio State – Dropped all three of her bouts vs. ND this season, losing 5-3 to fifth-year Carianne McCullough before losing to sophomores Destanie Milo (5-1) and Maggie Jordan (5-2).
* Leah Tracy, Ohio State – Beat McCullough each of the past two seasons (2-5, 3-5) while splitting with Milo (3-5, 5-2 Milo win) and dropping a 5-4 bout to Jordan this season.

* William Jones, Ohio State – Brother of OSU’s former NCAA competitor Alan Jones, Willy Jones has lost to Viviani (5-2) and Casas (5-4) last season before beating them at the 2002 OSU Duals (4-5, 2-5).
