WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 9 Georgetown scored the game’s only five second-half goals to top No. 19 Notre Dame 11-8 on Sunday afternoon at a warm and sunny Multi-Sport Field. Senior midfielder Grant Krebs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) paced the Fighting Irish with a career-high four goals.
Georgetown (7-3, 3-1) struck first on a goal from Andrew Brancaccio with 12:51 left in the first quarter. The Irish answered back just over two minutes later as junior midfielder Zach Brenneman (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) found the back of the net.
Notre Dame (5-5, 0-3) grabbed a 2-1 lead when sophomore attackman Nicholas Beattie (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) knifed his way through the Hoya defense and scored with 7:18 showing in the first quarter.
Georgetown evened things up (2-2) on a goal from Zack Angel with just under six minutes left in the first quarter. Freshman midfielder Steve Murphy (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) put the Fighting Irish back on top (3-2) 48 seconds later. Georgetown’s Scott Kocis knotted the contest as he scored with 3:29 left in the opening quarter.
The back-and-forth first quarter ended in a 3-3 tie.
Back-to-back goals from Krebs gave Notre Dame a 5-3 lead with 10:12 showing on the clock in the second quarter. Georgetown got back to within one (5-4) as Chris Schuville scored with seven minutes left in the opening half.
Consecutive man-up goals from Krebs produced a three-goal advantage (7-4) for Notre Dame with just under five minutes left in the first half. That was the largest lead of the day for the Fighting Irish.
Travis Corneau sliced the Georgetown deficit to two (7-5) with 3:16 on the clock in the second quarter. A score from Brian Casey 58 seconds later made it a one-goal affair (7-6).
A goal from Neal Hicks (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) with 28 seconds left in the first half gave Notre Dame an 8-6 lead at the intermission.
Senior Scott Rodgers (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) started in goal for the Fighting Irish and made four saves in the first half. Rodgers missed the previous game due to injury. Freshman John Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) played the entire second half between the pipes for Notre Dame and made six stops.
Back-to-back man-up goals from Brancaccio tied the game (8-8) with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter. The game was knotted 8-8 at the end of three periods.
Georgetown regained the lead (9-8) on a goal from Kocis at the 13:16 mark of the fourth quarter. The Hoyas went up by two (10-8) with just under 12 minutes left in the contest on a tally from Comeau. A Craig Dowd goal with 9:18 remaining produced the final score.
The Hoyas held a 36-33 edge in shots for the game. Georgetown won 12 of 23 faceoff attempts.
The Fighting Irish return home on Saturday, April 17 to face Providence in BIG EAST action. Game time is slated for noon (ET) at Arlotta Stadium.
