FT. WAYNE, Ind. – No. 18 Notre Dame defeated No. 14 Ohio State 2-0 on Saturday night in exhibition men’s soccer action at the National Soccer Festival at IPFW’s Hefner Stadium. Senior forwards Jeb Brovsky (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) and Steven Perry (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) tallied goals for the Irish.

Notre Dame went up 1-0 in the sixth minute as Brovsky blasted a kick from the penalty area into the lower left corner of the goal. The Irish led 1-0 at halftime.

Perry’s goal, on an assist from sophomore midfielder Dillon Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), gave the Fighting Irish a 2-0 advantage in the 63rd minute.

“We had two very good goals,” said Irish head coach Bobby Clark. “We looked very dangerous going forward tonight. The second goal was a terrific pass from Dillon (Powers) and a great run by (Steven) Perry as he got behind the goalie.”

Junior goalkeeper Will Walsh (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) made seven saves to earn the clean sheet for the Irish. Ohio State’s Matt Lampson and Ryan Dalton combined for three saves. Lampson surrendered both goals. Ohio State out shot Notre Dame 19-9 and the Buckeyes held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

“I felt the second half was exceptionally good for us,” stated Clark. “I thought our central defense really settled down and played well in the second half.”

The victory improved Notre Dame to 2-0 this preseason. The Irish defeated UIC 3-2 last Monday. The Irish will conclude their 2010 exhibition slate tomorrow against IPFW during the final day of the National Soccer Festival. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. (ET) start at Hefner Stadium.

“A lot of people played well for us tonight,” added Clark. “Tomorrow (against IPFW) we’ll play the guys who didn’t see as much time tonight.”

Notre Dame will open the regular season against No. 8 UCLA on Friday, Sept. 3 at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m. (ET). The Irish will open their regular-season home schedule against California at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Alumni Stadium. That match also is part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
