NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Due to inclement weather in the Cary, North Carolina area, the third annual USA Baseball-Irish Classic presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance has been canceled.

After battling inclement weather for much of the last week, the Triangle-area of North Carolina was blanketed with six to eight inches on Thursday morning. Officials from Notre Dame and USA Baseball, felt the decision to cancel the event was in the best interest of the participating teams.

“Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are still undefeated,” said Irish head coach, Mik Aoki. “Everyone involved tried to do everything we possibly could in order to give ourselves the best chance to play this tournament. But for the safety and well-being of all the student-athletes and the people that would be working or attending, it was best to make this decision. We are obviously disappointed, but we will put together a great field next year and hopefully play it in better weather.”

Instead, Notre Dame (7-1) will head to Macon, Georgia and the campus of Mercer University for games against Belmont University (2 p.m. Friday), Mercer (3 p.m. Saturday) and Akron (7 p.m. Saturday).

Fans will be able to follow all three games through WatchND’s audio broadcast (WHME 103.1 FM in South Bend) or by tracking live stats. Links for all three games are on UND.com.

More information on the weekend will follow later this afternoon.
