NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The seventh-ranked Irish women’s tennis team topped No. 17 Ohio State, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion, extending their winning streak to three matches and improving to 8-1 on the season.
The Irish took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Cosmina Ciobanu and Colleen Rielley downed Gabby Steele and Fidan Manashirova, 8-4, at No. 3 singles, before Shannon Mathews and Chrissie McGaffigan topped Paloma Escobedo and Christina Keesey, 8-5, at second doubles to clinch the point for Notre Dame. The eighth-ranked duo of Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik edged Kelsey Haviland and Cami Hubbs, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles to complete the sweep.
No. 23 Frilling upped the Irish lead to 2-0 after defeated No. 67 Flower, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Frilling improved her singles record to 9-0 on the season. Kristen Rafael cruised past Manashirova, 6-0, 6-3, at sixth singles to give Notre Dame a 3-0 advantage.
Mathews clinched the win for the Irish with a 6-2, 6-0 besting of Escobedo at No. 2 singles. No. 114 Krisik battled to take a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Haviland at fourth singles, while McGaffigan fought for a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 win over Keesey at No. 3. Ciobanu finished off Steele, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to complete the sweep.
The Irish return to the Eck Tennis Pavilion Saturday when they host No. 14 Georgia Tech at 11 a.m.
