Notre Dame, Ind. — The sixth-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the final 5:18 of the contest to defeat Army 17-13. The win improves the Irish to 9-1 on the season, its second best start in school history.

Junior Devin Ryan (Kensington, Md.) scored a career-high four goals and seniors Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) each tallied three scores to lead the Irish to their largest goal-scoring output of the season as eight different Notre Dame players scored in the game.

The 13 goals given up by the Irish in the contest also were the most scored by an Notre Dame opponent this season. It also marked only the second time in 10 games that the Irish allowed 10-plus goals in a game.

The setback was the fifth for the Cadets against a ranked opponent this season as they fell to 5-5 with the loss. Army was led by five players who scored two goals each in the contest – Joe Fernandez, Mike Kamon, Tim Pearson, John Ryan and Jimmy Vlahakis. Pearson and Vlahakis also were credited with an assist in the game.

Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.) and John Flandina (West Islip, N.Y.) scored two goals help secure the victory. Glatzel led the Irish with three assists in the contests, while David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) and Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) each added a goal and two assists in the game.

With the score tied at 13-13 following Tim Pearson’s man-up goal for Army with 9:28 remaining in the contest, the Irish took the lead on David Ulrich’s unassisted goal at the 5:18 mark. Todd Ulrich pushed the lead to 15-13 on an assist from Glatzel and then Harvey tallied the final two insurance goals of the contest with 2:14 and 24 seconds remaining in the game.

Momentum shifted throughout the entire contest as offensive seemed to be the name of the game for both teams.

Glatzel tallied the first three goals of the game for Irish who jumped out to an early 3-1 lead with 7:14 remaining in the first quarter. Army scored three unanswered goals with scores coming from Kamon, Fernandez and Pearson as the Cadets built a 4-3 lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter. Bishko’s goal with 50 seconds remaining knotted the game at 4-4 after one period.

Fernandez gave the Cadets an early 5-4 advantage in the second quarter, but Ryan first of three goals for the Irish tied the game for the third time with 11:29 remaining. Chris Woods put Army up 6-6, but back-to-back goals by Devin Ryan and David Ulrich gave the Irish a 7-6 advantage with 2:05 left before halftime.

John Ryan’s second goal of the game tied the contest for the fifth time at 7-7 with 1:37 remaining, but Harvey and Devin Ryan tallied scores in the final 1:37 as Notre Dame headed into the halftime break with a 9-7 advantage.

The Irish extended the lead to 11-7, its largest of the game, when they opened the third quarter with back-to-back scores by Bishko and Flandina. Army, however, would not quit as the Cadets pulled to within 11-10 on two goals by Vlahakis and a score by Kamon. Vlahakis assisted on Kamon’s goal as Army trailed 11-10 with 9:43 remaining.

Devin Ryan pushed the Irish lead to 12-10 at the 9:23 mark, but Ryan Hanrahan and Marko Kostovic’s back-to-back scores tied the game for the sixth time with 4:17 left in the third quarter. Flandina’s goal with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave the Irish the 13-12 advantage heading into the final period.

Pearson tied the game for the seventh and final time with his man-up goal at the 9:28 mark, but following that score the Irish defense held the Cadets in check to record their third straight victory over the team from West Point, N.Y.

Both goalies went the distance in the contest with Irish goalie Kirk Howell coming up with 9 saves and Army’s Dominic Nogic making 16 stops.

Notre Dame returns home to Moose Krause Stadium on Wed., April 18 when they play host to Great Western Lacrosse League foe Butler at 4:00 p.m.
