No. 6 Irish Head to Texas For Matches Against Baylor and Texas A&M

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The sixth-ranked Fighting Irish women’s tennis team will wrap up its seven-match road swing as it heads to Texas this weekend for matches against second-ranked Baylor and No. 39 Texas A&M.

The Irish will take on the Bears at 3:00 p.m. (CT) Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, before facing the Aggies at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in Waco.

Notre Dame is 15-2 on the season after picking up two wins last weekend. The Irish swept TCU, 7-0 March 27, before topping Wichita State, 6-1, the following day.

Sophomore Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio/Lehman & Abeka) leads the Irish with a 14-3 mark at No. 1 singles and is ranked 18th on the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Senior Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, Calif./Troy) is riding an 11-match win streak and is 15-2 on the season.

Freshman Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa/Bettendorf) notched her 12th win of the season over the weekend, and sophomore Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich./Cranbrook-Kingswood) hit the double-digit mark with her 10th singles victory.

The third-ranked doubles duo of Frilling and senior Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan./Arkansas City) kept their record perfect and improved to 13-0 on the season.

The second-ranked Baylor Bears come into Saturday’s match on a nine-match winning streak and are 15-2 this season. Most recently, Baylor defeated SMU, 4-0, on March 25, before taking down Texas, 5-2, on March 28. The Bears’ only losses this season have come at the hands of North Carolina and Michigan.

Baylor has four players ranked in the ITA’s latest poll. Lenka Broosova holds a 14-1 record at No. 1 singles and is ranked sixth nationally. No. 16 Nina Secerbegovic is 17-0 at second and third singles. Taylor Ormond is ranked 59th at 11-4, and No. 97 Csilla Borsanyi holds a 6-8 mark. Broosova and Borsanyi team up as the nation’s eighth-ranked doubles team with a 13-2 record.

Notre Dame is 3-2 all-time against Baylor. The Irish and the Bears met twice last season with Notre Dame taking a 4-3 win at the National Team Indoor Championships and Baylor claiming the 5-2 victory at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

The Texas A&M Aggies are 8-4 this season and have won five straight matches, most recently a 5-2 decision over Texas Tech March 28. The Aggies are led by No. 58 Elze Potgieter, who is 8-5 at No. 2 singles this season. Nazari Urbina and Morgan Frank both hold 12-1 marks and are ranked 70th and 116th, respectively.

Frank and Potgieter are the nation’s 43rd-ranked doubles team, while Potgieter and Urbina come in at 71.

Notre Dame is 6-1 all-time against Texas A&M and have won six straight, dating back to the 1992 season. A year ago, the Irish topped the Aggies, 6-1, at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
