WACO, Texas – Despite winning the doubles point, second-ranked Baylor proved too strong for the No. 6 Fighting Irish women’s tennis team as the Bears topped Notre Dame, 6-1, Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Irish fall to 15-3 on the season, while Baylor improves to 16-2.
The Irish took a 1-0 lead after taking two of three matches to win the doubles point. Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk topped Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, Calif./Troy) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich./Cranbrook-Kingswood), 8-1, at second doubles, before Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa/Bettendorf) and Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas/Nolan Catholic) edged Taylor Ormond and Carla Lindlar, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles to even the match. The fourth-ranked duo of Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio/Lehman & Abeka) and Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan./Arkansas City) won their 14th straight match as they downed No. 12 Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, 8-6, at first doubles to clinch the point for the Irish.
The sixth-ranked Broosova tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 18 Frilling at No. 1 singles. Karolina Filipiak topped Krisik, 6-3, 6-3, at sixth singles to put Baylor up 2-1.
No. 97 Borsanyi ended Ciobanu’s 11-match win streak with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at fourth singles, while Stanivuk bested Rafael, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 to clinch the victory for the Bears.
No. 16 Secerbegovic edged Mathews, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 2 singles, and No. 59 Ormond defeated No. 113 McGaffigan, 6-4, 7-6, at third singles to give Baylor the 6-1 win.
The Irish will wrap up their seven-match road swing Monday when they head to Texas A&M for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
