CHARLOTTE — The top-seeded Notre Dame baseball team got bit by the long ball as they fell to eight-seed Virginia 14-1 Friday afternoon at Truist Field in the Pool A finale.

Virginia (29-22) tallied four home runs in the game to take a commanding lead early on. The deficit was too far for the Irish (30-11) to fight back from as their tournament run came to a close.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia jumped out to a big lead in the top of the second with three home runs in the inning. A two-run shot from Nic Kent got the scoring started followed by a two-run homer from Alex Tappen and a solo shot from Jake Gelof. After the first two innings of play, the Cavaliers led 5-0.

The Cavaliers added a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-0 after five innings of play.

Virginia added on in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

The Irish did plate a run across in the bottom of the ninth after an RBI single from Danny Neri scored Alex Brait from second.
