KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The second-ranked Irish women’s tennis team improved to 16-2 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the 12th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols Sunday at the UT Varsity Courts.

Notre Dame got on the board first after winning the doubles point. Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik defeated Samantha Orlin and Maria Sorbello, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles to even the doubles matches at 1-1, after Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley fell to Zsofia Zubor and Rosalia Alda, 8-1, at No. 3. The third-ranked duo of Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling downed No. 32 Caitlin Whorisky and Natalie Pluskota, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point for the Irish.

Krisik put the Irish up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Zubor at No. 6 singles.

Orlin gave Tennessee their first point of the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Kristen Rafael at No. 3.

No. 33 Tefft defeated No. 48 Whorisky, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Ciobanu downed Alda, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2, at No. 4 singles to clinch the win for the Irish.

No. 49 Frilling topped Pluskota, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 2 singles. Mathews fell to Jennifer Meredith, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at fifth singles.

The Irish will visit Indiana Thursday for a 3 p.m. matchup.
