Notre Dame's women's and diving team to travel to Michigan Invitational this weekend

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 19 University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team (4-0) returns to the mainland, after a holiday break in Hawai’i, and travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to participate in the four-team Michigan Invitational, Jan. 12-13 at Canham Natatorium. The others teams participating this weekend are Illinois, No. 13 Indiana and host institution No. 10 Michigan.

Notre Dame arrives at the meet after a dual meet victory over Hawai’i on Jan. 4. Senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) had a pair of individual victories at the meet, as she took the crown in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.02) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.30). Carroll has now captured 10 individual titles on the year. Fellow senior Rebecca Grove (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) also had a strong meet. Grove won the 50-yard freestyle (23.90) and was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay winning team along with Carroll, Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) and Megan Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton).

The Michigan Invitational begins on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. The events on tap for the first day are the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and 400-yard medley relay.

The second day of the events will begin on Sat., Jan 13 at 9 a.m. with the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard breaststroke, three-meter diving and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The second session of day two starts at 4 p.m. The events that will be contested are the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Irish won the Michigan Invitational last season, Jan. 13-14, 2006, defeating Michigan and Illinois. Notre Dame is 8-2 against Illinois, 1-3 against Indiana and 5-6 against Michigan all-time.

Next, Notre Dame returns home to Rolfs Aquatic Center to host the Shamrock Invitational from Jan. 26-27. The other teams that are expected to compete are Penn State, Oakland, Connecticut and West Virginia.
