No. 17 Women's Tennis Falls To San Diego State

San Diego, Calif. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team, ranked 17th in the nation, fell today to No. 48 San Diego State 5-2 in San Diego, Calif. Notre Dame falls to 11-6 on the season, while San Diego State improves to 6-6.

Notre Dame took the doubles point as the number-one team of Becky Varnum and Lindsey Green, ranked 28th in the nation, defeated the team of Lindsay Hedberg and Silvia Tornier 8-4. The Irish also claimed the number-three doubles match as Sarah Jane Connelly and Alicia Salas won 8-5 over the team of Julie Ana Chidley and Indra Erichsen.

Connelly, at number-six, was the only Irish winner in singles today as she rallied from losing the first set 4-6, to win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-4 over Chidley. Varnum, who is ranked 63rd nationally, was the only other Irish player to take her match three sets, losing 7-6 in a third-set tiebreaker (6) to Tornier. Notre Dame lost the four remaining singles matches in straight sets.

The Irish women return to action Thursday, March 21, when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue.
