No. 15 Purdue Tops No. 19 Notre Dame 182-118 In Dual Meet Action

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 15th-ranked Purdue men’s swimming and diving team topped No. 19 Notre Dame 182-118 Saturday afternoon in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Fighting Irish claimed five victories, including two by sophomore Jay Vanden Berg (Holland, Mich.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard free. Other winners for the Irish were juniors Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind.), Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind.) and Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va.) in the 200-yard free, 50-yard free and the 100-yard butterfly, respectively. Notre Dame is now 1-1 in dual meet action so far during the 2005-06 season.

MEET RECAP:

200-Yard Medley Relay: Notre Dame’s `A’ team of Doug Bauman, Eric Swenson, Tim Kegelman and Louis Cavadini placed second (1:33.74) to put the Irish on the board with four points, while the `B’ squad of Alan Carter, Graham Parker, Andrew MacKay and Nick Fanslau was fourth (1:36.91).

1,000-Yard Freestyle: Vanden Berg claimed his first of two victories on the afternoon by touching the wall in 9:25.35. Freshman Jace Hopper placed third (9:29.43) and senior Patrick Davis was fourth (9:33.23) to help the Irish claim 14 of 18 points for the race.

200-Yard Freestyle: Brown made it back-to-back wins for the Fighting Irish to put the team up for the first and only time during the meet at 30-25. Brown clocked a time of 1:41.05, while junior Brian Freeman was fourth (1:42.55) and senior co-captain Jamie Lutkus was fifth (1:44.27).

100-Yard Backstroke: The Irish placed 3-4-5 to capture six points. Doug Bauman placed third (51.97) followed by MacKay (52.00) and Steve Shomberger (52.75).

100-Yard Breaststroke: Another 3-4-5 finished gave the Irish six more points but the team still trailed by nine points overall (51-42). Sophomore Graham Parker was third (59.12) with Daniel Rave (59.31) and Tyler Grenda (59.42) close behind in fourth and fifth, respectively.

200-Yard Butterfly: Senior co-captain Patrick Heffernan claimed a second-place finish (1:52.77) and fellow senior Bryan Guarnier came in fourth (1:54.95).

50-Yard Freestyle: Notre Dame got back in the win column as junior Louis Cavadini clocked a time of 21.09. Cavadini’s classmate Fanslau added another point for the Irish with his fifth-place finish (21.97).

100-Yard Freestyle: Brown and Louis Cavadini continued their success with a 2-3 finish in the event. Brown swam in a time of 46.71, while Cavadini touched the wall at 46.73.

200-Yard Backstroke: Seniors Doug Bauman and Shomberger placed third and fourth, respectively, with times of 1:53.36 and 1:53.79, yet the Irish still trailed the Boilermakers 99-70.

200-Yard Breaststroke: A 3-4-5 finish put six points on the board for the Irish but Purdue captured 13 for the event to widen the gap to 36 (112-76). Freshman Daniel Rave was third (2:06.14), Grenda was fourth (2:07.78) and Parker finished fifth (2:08.50).

500-Yard Freestyle: The Fighting Irish claimed their first 1-2-3 finish of the afternoon. Vanden Berg clocked a winning time of 4:34.69. Hopper was second in a time of 4:37.45 and Davis was third at 4:37.92. This is the second straight meet in which the Vanden Berg has won both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. The sophomore also captured both event versus Texas A&M on Oct. 21.

100-Yard Butterfly: Kegelman, a junior, notched his first victory of the season by touching the wall at 49.98. Brown clocked a fifth-place time of 51.58 to pull the Irish within 22 points (124-102) late in the meet.

400-Yard IM: Jamie Lutkus placed second (4:02.55) and Barber was fourth (4:05.87) to garner six points for Notre Dame.

400-Yard Freestyle Relay: Notre Dame’s “B” squad of Doug Bauman, Chris Barnes, Rob Seery and Alan Carter finished third in a time of 3:12.11. The Irish’s “D” team was fifth (3:20.46), while the “A” and “C” units were disqualified.

One-Meter Diving: Freshman Michael Bulfin and sophomore Sam Stoner tallied points for Notre Dame in the one-meter event. Bulfin placed second (289.65) and Stoner was fifth (248.62).

Three-Meter Diving: Bulfin and Stoner scored again in the three-meter event. Bulfin registered 319.95 total points and Stoner collected 275.93.

Notre Dame returns to the pool on Friday, Nov. 4 with a match-up at BIG EAST-rival Pittsburgh at 4:00 p.m. (ET). The Fighting Irish knocked off the Panthers twice last season, including an early season showdown in the Rolfs Aquatic Center that was decided in the last relay event. Notre Dame would later dethrone the eight-time defending BIG EAST champion Panthers at the conference meet in February.
