HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – No. 5 Hofstra used a 6-0 run in the third quarter to pull ahead of No. 11 Notre Dame and go on to win 13-5 on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. The loss drops the Fighting Irish to 4-2 on the season, while the win gives the Pride a 5-1 mark. Senior Brian Hubschmann led the Irish with three goals, while Athan Iannucci and Chris Unterstein both netted four goals for Hofstra.
With the game all knotted up at four early in the second half, Hofstra tallied six straight third quarter goals to make it a 10-4 contest entering the final period. Iannucci tallied two of his goals during that span, which began after Hubschmann tied the game at 4-4 with just 39 seconds gone by in the half.
Hubschmann would then put an end to the Hofstra run with his third goal of the day just 19 seconds into the fourth quarter. The hat-trick is his second of the season and the fourth of his Irish career. The Pride erased any hopes of a Fighting Irish comeback as they tallied three straight goals, including two by Unterstein, to make it a 13-5 final.
Hofstra jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Pride’s Ryan Lucas put in an unassisted tally with less than five minutes gone by in the opening period. Iannucci would then notch back-to-back goals to up the Hofstra lead to three.
Notre Dame responded behind consecutive tallies from Matt Karweck. The senior midfielder’s first score came with 1:09 left in the quarter on a Peter Christman assist and he would net his second just 39 seconds later on a pass from Pat Walsh.
With the Fighting Irish trailing 3-2 early in the second quarter, Hubschmann took a pass from Matt Ryan and tied the contest with 8:22 left on the clock.
The Pride would take a 4-3 lead into the half on an unassisted goal from Unterstein with 1:49 remaining in the stanza.
Next up for the Irish will be a match-up versus Brown on Wednesday, March 29 at Moose Krause Stadium. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. and the contest will be aired live on Comcast Local.
