CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team defeated Clemson 5-2 earlier today. The Irish are now 12-5 on the season.
After losing the doubles point and the No. 2 singles match, Notre Dame came back to win the last five points in a row. The victory was reminiscent of wins over Kentucky and Minnesota earlier in the season when the Irish had to battle back from a deficit.
“Today’s win was a good one, an important one of our team,” said head coach Ryan Sachire. “Our players did a great job of reestablishing the toughness and competitiveness that has been the hallmark of Fighting Irish tennis this season, and we played well down the stretch to beat a very good team on their home courts. We have to continue to get better and build on this win.”
Senior Greg Andrews won his match to bring in the first point for the Irish, taking down Hunter Harrington 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Freshmen Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar and sophomore Eric Schnurrenberger also won their matches in straight sets, with Hagar clinching the Irish win at No. 4 against Austin Ansari, 6-3, 7-5.
Senior Ryan Bandy claimed the fifth Notre Dame point in a tiebreaker after splitting sets against Alejandro Augusto, 6(3)-7, 6-4, (10-8).
Notre Dame will now travel to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia Tech on Sunday.
