GREENSBORO, N.C. — Before they take final exams and head home for the holidays, a handful of Notre Dame swimmers have one more meet to close out this calendar year.
On Wednesday, nine Irish swimmers will head to Greensboro, N.C., for the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open hosted by the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The prized pool has hosted several high-profile events in recent years, including TYR Pro Swim Series meets, NCAA Championships and the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open. It is also this year’s site for the ACC Championships, which will take place in mid-February.
Hundreds of swimmers will descend upon Greensboro for the Nov. 30-Dec. 3 competition, including members of recent Olympic teams and the 2022 FINA World Championships U.S. roster. Notre Dame will have the following swimmers attending:
Women:
Sophomore Sophia Karras — 400 Free, 800 Free & 1500 Free
Freshman Mary Codevilla — 100 Breast, 200 Breast, 100 Free & 200 IM
Men:
Senior Cason Wilburn — 100 Fly, 50 Free & 100 Free
Junior Sean Faikish — 100 Breast, 200 Breast, 200 IM & 400 IM
Sophomore Chris Guiliano — 50 Free, 100 Free & 200 Free
Freshman Tate Bacon — 100, Fly, 200 Fly, 100 Back & 50 Free
Freshman Dillon Edge — 100 Fly, 100 Breast, 200 Breast, 100 Free & 200 IM
Freshman Tommy Janton — 100 Back, 200 Back & 50 Free
Freshman Sammy Sierra — 200 Fly & 200 IM
On the women’s side, Codevilla and Karras are two rising stars for Peterson Family Head Coach Chris Lindauer. Karras, a distance freestyler, already ranks sixth in school history in the 1000 freestyle (9:53.04) and eighth in the 1650 freestyle (16:25.83).
Codevilla was the fourth-ranked swimmer out of Colorado and eighth-ranked swimmer nationally in the 2022 class. She was a seven-time CHSAA 4A state champion. In her brief collegiate career, Codevilla notched a pair of top-24 finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke (1:02.38 and 2:16.44, respectively) at the Ohio State Invitational just before Thanksgiving.
Switching the men’s side, a stout group of freshmen make up four of the seven swimmers. In Columbus, Janton already made his way into the No. 9 spot in program history in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 47.22.
Bacon has made a splash early as well, earning a pair of second place finishes in his first dual meet against Pittsburgh and Penn State in October.
Guiliano, Faikish and Wilburn already pepper the Irish top-10 times list, and Guiliano is the school record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyle (19.17 and 42.34). He will look to lower those marks in Greensboro.
