#22 Notre Dame Falls Short At #11 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Fighting Irish concluded their regular season road schedule with a tough loss to No. 11 North Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals met Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill for a top-25 showdown as No. 22 Notre Dame fell 5-0 to the 11th ranked Tarheels.

Doubles
UNC jumped out in front with a sweep in doubles, taking courts one and three by a 6-0 score. Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells trailed 2-3 on the second court when their match was abandoned.

Singles
Cabrera notched a first set victory for the team as he beat Tarheels’ Brian Cernoch in the tiebreaker, 7-6(8). His second set was left unfinished while he looked to clinch the Irish point. 

Two other sets were pushing the seventh game point as Grayson Broadus fell in a close 5-7 set on the fifth court and Howells held his opponent, Blaine Boyden, tied at five when the match was called.

Up Next
Notre Dame will finish their regular season next weekend with a series of home matches, including a senior night to honor the four members of the Class of 2019. 

Their first match is set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 as they face Georgia Tech. The team then welcomes Clemson and Nebraska-Omaha to town for a Sunday doubleheader with the first match scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. against the Tigers. 

The Irish and Lancers then play at 4:30 p.m. in the final regular season match of 2019.
