SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame baseball team got an unbelievable experience Wednesday night when they got to take on the South Bend Cubs, the Chicago Cubs single-A affiliate, in a five-inning exhibition at Four Winds Field. Pitching was on display for both sides as the Cubs edged the Irish 1-0.
How It Happened
A number of young Irish players got experience against the South Bend Cubs Wednesday night.
Ryan Carr got the start in left field and led off for the Irish. He worked a walk and stole second during the first inning.
After a strong relief appearance Saturday against Georgia Tech, Alex Rao got the nod on the hill for the Irish. He allowed a run but got a strikeout and forced a 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the first. The next inning, Rao set the Cubs down in order.
Evan Tenuta entered the game in the third, his first appearance for the Irish. Tenuta also had a 1-2-3 inning, setting the Cubs down in order. After a double in the fourth, Tenuta got the final batter in the inning to fly out and ended the threat.
In the fifth and final inning of the exhibition, the Irish put the tying run on base after John Arndorfer singled to start the inning but Irish couldn’t get him around to score.

Notre Dame will continue its homestand with a three-game series with Virginia at Frank Eck Stadium. The series kicks off Friday night with first pitch scheduled at 6 p.m. ET and it will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra. This weekend’s series is Military Appreciation Weekend at the park and all veteran and active duty military will receive free admission to all three games.
