GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Notre Dame men’s swim team opened the third day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with 17 individuals qualifying for a second swim and a program record in the 100 backstroke.
“Our guys fought hard tonight and we had a lot of fast swimming,” Head Coach Mike Litzinger said. “17 performances today broke into our all-time top 10. We have clawed our way out of 10th and currently sit sixth.”
Heading into the final day of competition, the Irish boast 473 points and are sixth in the conference standings.
Jack Montesi highlighted the morning prelims with an eighth place finish in the 100 back, touching the wall in 46.33 for the Irish program record. His finish also solidified his spot in the evening’s championship heat, taking the final spot. Andrew Winton also qualified for an A final race (400 IM) to give the Irish two on the day.
The first evening event featured four Irish men as they competed in the 100 fly finals. Zach Smith led the way with a time of 46.39 and 13th overall before Aaron Schultz (14th, 46.51) and Matt Grauslys (16th, 46.63) clocked in shortly after. In the C final, Jack Montesi swam his first finals race, turning in a time of 46.87 for 20th overall.
In the 400 IM, Winton recorded an eighth place finish in the A final with a time of 3:51.11 followed by Will Cumberland in the consolation heat, touching the wall in 3:46.91 for 13th. The C final saw three familiar Irish faces as Marci Barta took first in the heat and 17th overall (3:47.13). Max Miranda finished 19th in the finals with a time of 3:48.29 while Joseph Turk turned in a 3;48.74 finish for the 20th spot.
In the 200 free C final, Sadler McKeen recorded a time of 1:36.39 for 21st overall in the event.
The 100 breast finals had four individuals representing the Irish as they looked to add points to the board and boost Notre Dame in the standings. Joshua Bottelberghe led the way for the men as he touched in 53.44 and 11th overall. Matt Limbacher and Steven Shek followed close behind, finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Rex Riley raced in the C final where he finished with a time of 54.72 and 23rd overall.
The final individual event of the evening concluded with an eighth place finish from Jack Montesi who previously set the team record during the morning prelims. He touched the wall with a final time of 46.48 while Zach Smith took second in the C final and 18th overall, posting a time of 47.29.
The men concluded the day with a ninth place finish in the 400 medley relay. Jack Montesi, Steven Shek, Zach Smith and Aaron Schultz combined for a final time of 3:09.30, shaving over two seconds off their seeded time.
“Tomorrow will be a big day for the group and I am looking forward to seeing them continue to work as a team,” he added.

The final day of ACC Championships begins Saturday at 10 a.m. as the teams compete in the last preliminary races of the week. Finals are scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. and can be streamed live on the ACC Network and WatchESPN.
