Men's Lacrosse Defeats Penn State, 10-4, In Season Opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. —– The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team used a balanced scoring attack and stifling defense as the Irish defeated Penn State 10-4 in the season opener for both teams. Eight different Irish players scored in the contest as Notre Dame limited the Nittany Lions to just one second-half goal in securing its first win of the season.

The Irish were helped by an 8-0 run late in the second quarter until late in the fourth quarter which saw Notre Dame outscore the visitors 8-1 in the second half.

Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) scored twice in the victory.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early 1-0 on sophomore attack Owen Asplundh’s (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) first career goal with five minutes to play in the first quarter off an assist from Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.).

Following Asplundh’s initial goal, Penn State scored three unanswered goals of their own. Luke Ogelsby, off an assist from Don Mayerhofer got the Nittany Lions on the scoreboard with 34 seconds to play in the first quarter. Back-to-back unassisted goals by Ted Holmes and Mayerhofer gave Penn State a 3-1 advantage with 8:35 remaining before intermission.

Notre Dame scored its second goal of the game with 1:30 left until halftime to start the 8-0 as Glatzel netted the first of his two scores in the game off a John Flandina (West Islip, N.Y.) assist.

Glatzel tallied the initial goal of the second half which tied the contest at 3-3 off a Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) assist. Notre Dame would go to score four more goals in the third quarter as the Irish received goals from Devin Ryan (Kensington, Pa.), Harvey, Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.J.) and Stedman Oakey (Charlottesville, Va.) in just over eight minutes.

Flandina tallied the first score of the fourth quarter off a Todd Ulrich assist, his second in the contest, before Mayerhofer’s second goal of the game broke the PSU scoring drought with 3:04 left to play. David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) who had two assists in the game, had the game’s final score with 1:57 remaining.

Notre Dame dominated the Nittany Lions in ground balls play with a 41-26 advantage and owned a 12-3 advantage in face-offs.

Senior goalie Kirk Howell (Charlottesville, Va.) came up with a career-high 18 saves in goal, while Penn State goalie Matt Vallone made 17 in the loss.

Notre Dame plays the first of three straight road games when the Irish travel to Pennsylvania on Saturday, March 4 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
