IRISH FACE FIRST ROAD TEST IN THE GARDEN AGAINST OKLAHOMA

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (6-1) begins a key three-game road swing that will feature contests against ‘Power 5’ teams across the country on Tuesday, December 4, when the Irish take part in the Jimmy V Classic and face Oklahoma (6-1) on ESPN.

NOTRE DAME vs. OKLAHOMA

  • The Irish and Sooners will be meeting for the first time in men’s basketball on Tuesday evening.
  • Mike Brey and Lon Kruger will be facing each other as opposing head coaches for the first time on Tuesday evening.
  • Notre Dame is 50-20 all-time against teams from the Big 12 – with 40 of those 70 meetings coming against West Virginia when both teams were members of the BIG EAST Conference.
  • Once the Irish face Oklahoma on Tuesday night, Oklahoma State will be the lone Big 12 team to never face the Irish in men’s basketball.

NOTRE DAME at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

  • The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team boasts a noteworthy history in ‘The World’s Most Famous Arena.’
  • The Irish took part in the first college basketball doubleheader in MSG history (at the previous location), falling to NYU 28-16 on December 29, 1934.
  • Notre Dame is 59-51 all-time at Madison Square Garden (42-42 in the current venue – see page 8 for a full historical list of Notre Dame’s previous MSG appearances).
  • The Irish have previously visited MSG for the Jimmy V Classic in 2007, defeating Kansas State, 68-59, on December 4, 2007.
  • For postseason NIT games, Notre Dame is 8-5 at MSG with appearances in the 1973 (vs. Virginia Tech), 1984 (vs. Michigan) and 2000 (vs. Wake Forest) post season NIT championship games (all three losses).
  • For postseason BIG EAST Conference tournament games, the Irish were 11-19 overall, but finished up their final four years in the BIG EAST tourney with a 6-4 record and four consecutive trips to the conference tournament semifinals.
  • The Irish are 2-2 against teams from the Big 12 Conference at MSG (1-0 vs. Kansas State in the 2007 Jimmy V Classic, 1-2 vs. West Virginia).
  • Under Mike Brey, the Irish are 12-21 all-time at MSG and 10-12 in BIG EAST Conference tournament action.

THE RYAN HUMPHREY OKLAHOMA CONNECTION

Notre Dame asisstant coach Ryan Humphrey, in his third season on the Irish bench, hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and played his first two years of college basketball at Oklahoma.

An All-Big 12 performer as a sophomore at Oklahoma under Kelvin Sampson (11.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 bpg, 50.2 FG%), Humphrey decided to transfer to Notre Dame with a desire to play for Matt Doherty, who recruited Humphrey as an assistant at Kansas. Doherty only spent a year (1999-2000) with Notre Dame before taking the head job at North Carolina and Humphrey eventually played his final two collegiate seasons under current Irish head coach Mike Brey.

Humphrey sat out the 1999-2000 season due to the NCAA transfer regulations, but his move to Notre Dame was helped by his twin sister Robyn, who also transferred from Oklahoma to Notre Dame at the same time.

Humphrey Notes:

  • Participated in the 2002 NCAA Final Four Slam Dunk Contest.
  • In the summer of 1998 was one of 32 collegians who participated in the USA Goodwill Games Team trials and was one of the last two players cut before the final roster.
  • Saved some of his best basketball at Notre Dame during the NCAA tournament, averaging 16.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg and 3.5 bpg in four appearances.
  • If his total rebounds from Oklahoma were added to his Notre Dame totals, would rank sixth all-time in Notre Dame history with 1,040 rebounds.
  • Was just three points shy (997) of scoring 1,000 points in his two-year Notre Dame career.
  • A powerful post presence and slam dunk specialist, Humphrey is still remembered for shattering a fiberglass backboard on a rebound dunk during practice in November of 2000.
  • Has a twin sister, Robyn, who also started college at Oklahoma and transferred to Notre Dame.
  • Spent time in the summer pro leagues for the Orlando Magic (2002), Memphis Grizzlies (2003, 2004) and Golden State Warriors (2006).
  • Also spent some time on the Minnesota Timberwolves preseason camp in 2006 and the Los Angeles Clippers roster during the 2006 season.
  • He and his wife, RaSheda have two sons, Ryan and Rylan.

NOTRE DAME vs. OKLAHOMA – BY THE NUMBERS

1

Notre Dame and Oklahoma are meeting for the first time in men’s basketball on Tuesday evening.

2

Returning starters for the Irish in 2017-18 (Rex Pflueger, T.J. Gibbs), matching the 2002-03 and 2009-10 seasons for the lowest in the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present).

3

Junior John Mooney leads the ACC in double-doubles (3) and has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in four of his last five games played.

4

Freshman Prentiss Hubb earned his first career start against William & Mary (11/17/18) and has helped the Irish to a 4-0 record in his first four career starts while scoring in double figures in each game.

5

Notre Dame is in the midst of five games that will take place against five teams from college basketball’s ‘power’ conferences – the BIG EAST (DePaul), the Big Ten (Illinois and Purdue), the Big 12 (Oklahoma) and the Pac-12 (UCLA). The Irish defeated DePaul 95-70 and Illinois 76-74 to start the run of games 2-0.

6

With five blocks in the victory over Illinois junior Juwan Durham became just the sixth Mike Brey-era player to block five or more shots in a game multiple times – joining a distinguished list of former Irish stars that includes current Irish assistant coach Ryan Humphrey, Jordan Cornette, Luke Harangody, Torin Francis and Bonzie Colson.

7

Notre Dame began the 2018-19 season with a seven-game home stand – the longest to begin a season since 1986. It was the second-longest streak of home games to begin a season of the Mike Brey era, as the Irish played six straight at home to begin the 2013-14 season.

11

The most recent and only previous Jimmy V Classic appearance for Notre Dame occurred exactly 11 years ago to the day of Tuesday night’s game. Notre Dame defeated Kansas State 68-59 in the late game of the doubleheader, led by 19 points and 14 rebounds by Luke Harangody. Current Irish assistant coach Ryan Ayers started the game for Notre Dame, scoring five points with three rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes.

30

Atlantic Coast Conference teams combined to win their first 30 games of the 2018-19 season, marking the best non-conference start in conference history (29-0 in 2003-04).

40

With five players new to the program playing major roles in the rotation (freshmen Robby Carmody, Dane Goodwin, Prentiss Hubb and Nate Laszewski along with junior transfer Juwan Durham) the Irish have seen 40 percent (220) of their 544 points scored this season coming from players seeing their first action in a Notre Dame uniform.

94

Mike Brey is 45-4 (.938) at Notre Dame against first-time program meetings (the Irish and Sooners are meeting for the first time on Tuesday evening).

110

Notre Dame has played 110 games at Madison Square Garden (84 at the current facility) – the most of any other venue save Purcell Pavilion or the Notre Dame Fieldhouse.

508

With 508 career wins, Mike Brey is the 11th active coach to reach that career milestone coaching at just one or two institutions.

1996

Notre Dame’s first road game of the season takes place Tuesday night – that marks the latest road game of the season of the Mike Brey era (at Iowa in the first ACC/Big Ten Challenge game for the Irish on December 3, 2013) and the latest for the program since a trip to Providence on December 7, 1996.

$3M

Notre Dame’s Coaches vs. Cancer events since Mike Brey arrived in 2000-01 have raised over three million dollars for cancer research. Close to 80-percent of those funds remain in the Michiana area for research and treatment.
