Men's Track And Field Win Indoor Season-Opening Meet

The University of Notre Dame men’s track and field team opened the 2001 indoor track season with a tri-meet victory over Western Michigan and Ball State, Friday night at the Loftus Sports Center. The men earned the meet title with 125 points, followed by Ball State with 111 and Western Michigan with 87.

Sophomore Tom Gilbert (Rock Falls, Ill.) earned two event victories in the 200 meters (21.74) and long jump (23-2 1/2). Cross country All-American Pat Conway (Springfield, Va.) ran to a victory in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 4:14.51.

Sophomore Nick Setta (Lockport, Ill.) made the transition from football placekicker to sprinter by finishing second in the 500 meters (1:04.92). Senior Travis Davey (St. John’s, NY) helped the Irish maintain their team lead in the meet by winning the 60 meters in 6.91.

Another notable performance for the men’s team was by freshman Godwin Mbagwu (Petersburg, Va.). In his first collegiate event, Mbagwu finished second in the long jump (22-5 3/4) and won the triple jump competition with a leap of 50-4 3/4.

Next up for the Irish is another home meet with Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 26. Competition starts at 6 p.m.
