Men's Soccer Wins Scotland Tour Opener, 6-1

Aug. 5, 2002

The Notre Dame men’s soccer team opened its 2002 summer tour of Scotland with a 6-1 victory over Formatine United, in a Sunday afternoon game 20 miles outside of Aberdeen (the team’s headquarters from Aug. 2-14).

Rising senior forward Erich Braun forged a first-half tie before giving the Irish a 2-1 lead, with a goal from rising senior midfielder Paul Rodriguez shortly before halftime yielding a 3-1 edge for the weary Notre Dame squad (which had arrived in Scotland some 24 hours earlier).

Junior to-be forward Devon Prescod checked into the game early in the second half and scored shortly thereafter for a 4-1 lead, with goals from rising senior forward Rafael Garcia and senior-to-be midfielder Justin Ratcliffe rounding out the scoring.

Rising sophomore Chris Sawyer played the first half in goal for the Irish, with senior-to-be Greg Tait logging the second half.

Three rising sophomores – Chris High, Jack Stewart and Kevin Goldthwaite – started in the Irish defense, as did junior-to-be Kevin Richards. Ratcliffe and rising junior Greg Martin started centrally in the midfield, with Rodriguez and junior-to-be Chad Riley playing wide.

Braun and Garcia were the starting forwards, with Prescod replacing Braun in the second half. Rising junior Justin Detter also checked in for Martin while sophomore-to-be Gianni Mauro replaced Riley on the right flank.
