Men's Soccer Earns Split At IPFW Soccer Showcase

Fort Wayne, Ind. — The Notre Dame men’s soccer team finished up 1-1 at the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sunday as the Irish defeated Akron 4-3, rebounding from a 2-0 loss to South Carolina the previous day. The two-day event concluded the exhibition preseason for the Irish as first-year head coach Chris Apple’s team finished with a 2-1 in its three matches.

In the victory over the Zips, Notre Dame used two goals in a 3:07 span to pull out the win. After Akron took a 3-2 lead with 28 minutes remaining in the contest, freshman Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) tallied an unassisted goal in the 67th minute, while another rookie Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.) tallied the game-winning goal off a feed from Detter at the 69:22 mark.

Freshman Kevin Richards (Warwick, Bermuda) opened the scoring 1:45 into the contest with an unassisted goal. After the early score by the Irish, the two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1 following Orjan Bjneso’s goal at the 28:33 mark.

Junior Matt Rosso (Churchville, Pa.) broke the 1-1 deadlock 8:14 into the second half off an assist from Reggie McKnight (Greenville, S.C.). Akron scored the next goals to earn a 3-2 lead. Dusty Ducharme knotted the game at 2-2 off a Matt Bossell feed at 56:59 with Bossell tallying the third Akron score of the game.

Sophomore Cole Straub (Oakville, Ontario) made seven saves as he played all 90 minutes of the contest. Akron outshot Notre Dame 14-9 in the game, but the Irish owned a 9-7 advantage on corner kicks.

Notre Dame opens up the season against New Mexico in Las Vegas, N.V. on Fri., Sept. 1 at the UNLV Fila/Snickers Rebel Classic. The Irish meet host UNLV on Sun., Sept. 3.
